About the Artwork

"Pops I'm Frozen" by Doug Bloodworth is a photorealistic painting. Doug refined the craft of photorealism by combining pop art, photography, and textural paint strokes. In "Pops I'm Frozen," summer's essence crystallizes upon the canvas. A lone double popsicle, its ruby-red frozen flesh glistening under the light, lies sprawled on a pristine white surface. The art style, photorealistic to the point of chilling, amplifies its icy appeal, beckoning you to reach out and feel the frosty bite on your fingertips. The popsicle's cherry hue is not a uniform blanket but a vibrant dance of shades. Towards the core, the color deepens, hinting at the rich cherry syrup at its heart. The edges fade to a delicate blush, transforming the popsicle into a frozen shard of summer joy. "I loved the dramatic lighting and used comic books and snacks…..a lot of them being the products that I had painted all those years," described Doug on how he started photorealistic painting. "I really enjoyed this and painted my products as they really were (I love painting the crumbles) and bags, maybe wrinkled and upside down. I considered it almost anti-advertising." I enjoy evoking the viewer’s nostalgic feelings of one’s childhood, be that in comic books, games we played, or our comfort foods.

In the Press

A combination of pop art, photography and textural paint strokes, Doug Bloodworth’s work was born from boyhood inspirations and has grown into the refined craft of photorealism. In 1974, Doug earned a degree in Commercial Arts and went on during the early stages of his career to work in several genres of the art world. From painting caricatures to billboards, Doug’s pursuits steered him towards the mastery of fine art techniques and a working mentorship with Marv Gunderson, the exclusive artist for the Marlboro brand. Painting iconic works on billboards all over the country was a highlight early on in his career and he still draws from the inspiration and lessons learned during the tour.
